Axat is a scenic village in the Pyrenees foothills near the Mediterranean--2 hours SE of Toulouse, ! hour S of Carcassonne, 45 mins W of Perpignan, just N of Andorra and Spain in the Languedoc-Roussillon in Southwest France. Axat enjoys lots of sunshine and a moderate Mediterranean climate with the sea nearby and cool mountain air. Activities are white-water rafting, kayaking, horse riding, cycling, skiing, swimming in the gorgeous village heated outdoor pool, rock climbing, walking and wine-tasting. For history lovers, it's the heart of Cathar country with spectacular 12C fortress castles--Puilaurens, Queribus, Peyrepertuse and Montsegur. The fun Train du Pays Cathare goes from Axat through famed wine country to Maury and Rivesaltes.
