About this property

Lovely Oceanside Cottage with Spectacular Views, 2 minutes to beach

This stunning oceanside cottage is located five minutes from the Cabot Trail on a 14-acre property and has been featured in Canadian House & Home and Victoria Magazines.

You’ll love the clean air and the sound of waves rolling in on the rocks below SeaSky. It's only two minutes to the beach itself. This architect-designed cottage is built on a bluff over the ocean and was designed to recall the best aspects of Maritime tradition, but to modernize them with an open-concept interior. It has a summer-y feeling, with a high ceiling, boarded walls and fresh white paint.

Sunsets will knock your socks off. This design is best suited for couples, or couples with one or two children. There's a large deck with a BBQ and amazing views. The ocean and beach views are breathtaking! As you relax at the cottage in the evening, you’ll be reassured by the steady cadence of the Margaree Island lighthouse.

For connecting with friends, streaming or surfing, you'll love having a fast, fibre-op connection, even though we are seemingly far from the hubbub. Dig into a good book, or just enjoy the views.

This cottage changes over on Fridays only. If your preferred weeks happen to be booked, please check our other lovely oceanside cottages: #4265347 #382569, #3490361 #277105 #2599594 This cottage normally books by the week, Fridays to Fridays when you are choosing your dates.

REFUNDS: Although the listing shows "No refunds for cancellations," we DO offer refunds (in circumstances described in the "House Rules" section of this listing. VRBO's cancellation standard categories are not broad enough to cover all policies.)

The second-floor bed area offers two Queen beds on either side of the loft; this area is accessed by regular stairway with a landing. There's a sturdy wood stove on the main floor which is great to have on a chilly Spring or Fall evening. For rainy days, there's a well-stocked library and games for the kids. The roomy deck outside offers a BBQ and incredible views of the ocean, beach, island and horizon. All on a gorgeous property with 3 large ponds and 2 spring-fed brooks. You'll have a tough time leaving the cottage!

SeaSky cottage is also close to the acclaimed new Cabot Cliffs and Cabot Links golf courses by the sea, which are only 20 minutes away and offer a unique golfing experience in Inverness. The National Park is 30 minutes away, the Cabot Trail five minutes away.

Fishermen haul their lobster traps each year out in front of our cottage. Moose, eagles, deer and foxes are regulars. It's easy to meet people here, and the daily pace here is slower than in most cities. It's nice to be in a place where you don't need air-conditioning; Cape Breton summers are warm-to-hot in the day, but perfect in the evening, and at the shore there are ocean breezes to keep any bugs at bay.

Chimney Corner beach is one of the finest on the island, but because it is not visible from the road, it's usually unoccupied during the week. In addition to the fine beaches and swimming, there are interesting rock formations to explore nearby. Cape Breton is a spectacular place, and you'll find the scenery on this stretch of coast particularly striking.

Other things to do:
There is no shortage of things to do in the area. The world-famous Cabot Trail is only 6 minutes away and offers some of the best scenery in Canada. Cape Breton Highlands National Park, with trails, lookoffs and waterfalls, is only 30 minutes away. In addition to Chimney Corner beach (2 minutes away), there are other great beaches to check out nearby: Whale Cove (3 minutes away) at which you can explore a fabulous bluff by the sea, with great views north and south, Margaree Harbour (6 minutes away), with its beach and two lighthouses, the Broad Cove area, which offers a spectacular scenic drive, a great beach and a buffalo ranch. Cheticamp, about 25 minutes away, offers glimpses into Acadian culture.

South of us are the gorgeous rolling hills of Mabou, and the town of Inverness, which offer music, pubs and food; the acclaimed new Cabot Links and Cabot Cliffs golf courses by the sea (which are only 20 minutes away), and offer a unique golfing experience in Inverness. There are also renowned crafters in the area; interesting quilting, rug hooking, and folk-art sculpture can all be found locally.

So Beautiful!
Wow, what a beautiful spot. Such a breath-taking view and relaxing spot. The cottage is fantastic. It has everything you need. Comfortable beds, great style and the kitchen has everything you need if your are making meals at home. Stewart was so helpful, he had wonderful tips and suggestions that we wouldn't have figured out on our own. We had a lot of privacy, and Stewart was available by email if we ever had any questions. I would highly recommend this spot.

Bliss Beside a Cape Breton Sea.
A cozy architectural wonder of charming g decoration facing that vast expanse of ocean called the Gulf of St. Lawerence, where bald headed eagles made eye contact flying past the kitchen in the morning and sunsets worthy of Van Gogh’s brush ended every day. This property and its owners are class personified.

On the glorious edge of sea and sky
Stayed for a week in July. Sunsets, from an unencumbered view, provided nightly entertainment and our most cherished memories. The cottage is pretty much as advertised - cute, clean, well-stocked, great front deck. Owner Stewart joined us for a drink on the deck on our arrival and generously spent time providing recommendations and marking up a map for us. Didn't realize his property was right behind us as angle of the photos and drone footage don't reveal that, however, our space was respected and the cottage is situated facing out to the water (and the parking is in separate spot too) so it maintains a sense of privacy. We were 2 people and cottage was perfect size; not sure would work for a family or more than one couple as both beds are in the open concept loft (which means noise downstairs travels to the upstairs if your sleep schedules are not aligned) and the stairs themselves could be tricky for little ones or older folk. Beds themselves were okay - a little low and mattress was not super supportive. Would have also loved an extra reading light in the living room once the sunset show called it a night. But these are just quibbles for a place to which we'd most definitely want to return if Toronto was but closer! As for the cottage locale - nice midway spot between Mabou and the national park. The local beach was usually empty (except for jellies!); we preferred the beach at Inverness but still was nice to be able to look through the window over at the local beach while washing dishes! Stewart's recommendations for things to do held up, including delicious kimchi grilled cheese sandwiches from Brook Village Grocery. Was difficult to find fresh fish in grocery stores oddly enough (though finally got some delicious takeout pre-cooked lobster from The Seafood Stop) and I would recommend visitors bring any favourite food stuffs with them as the local stores have limited offerings. But overall, a fantastic getaway.

Exceptional property and host
We thoroughly enjoyed our (too short) weeklong stay at Seasky cottage. It provided exactly what we needed for our vacation. It had all the amenities one would need in a property. The cottage was very clean, comfortable and welcoming, and provided lots of restful peace and quiet. There were beautiful sunsets and sunrises over the ocean with a lovely beach near by. We watched the fisherman haul in the lobster traps and reset them each morning, and watched a pair of eagles on the cliff near the beach. Stewart was a wonderful host, friendly and very knowledgeable - providing great insight into unique hikes, sight seeing and restaurants. The cottage is located in a great location for getting to many sites on Caper Breton including Cape Breton National Park, Baddeck (lobster supper), and so forth. We enjoyed the recommended White Point hiking trail that leads to the unknown sailor memorial site. A nearby café/restaurant not to miss for breakfast and/or lunch is the Dancing Goat in Margaree Forks. We were sorry to leave but intend to return in the future. We highly recommend staying at Seasky or the other of Stewart’s nearby cottages. You could not ask for a better property or host.

Bell and I built the cottage in 1994 as a summer house when we hadn't yet settled permanently in Cape Breton. We are both artists, and when we decided to live here all year 'round, in 1997, we needed more room–we built another building to contain studio and production space and commuted between the buildings every day. Eventually, over the years, we migrated to the larger building permanently, and used the cottage for studio space and for guests. So, the cottage is a special place for us, and we laboured for years to make it right.

Why they chose this property

Cape Breton is a spectacular place, and the scenery on this stretch of coast is particularly striking; it can also be dramatic, with 130 kph winds at many points of the year. There is such a rich culture here, historically and musically, and life unwinds at its own special pace. We see some of the most dramatic sunsets anywhere, watch whales play in our front yard, and fishermen haul their lobster traps every year. There are the gorgeous rolling hills of Mabou, and the town of Inverness, which offers music, pubs and food; the acclaimed new Cabot Links and Cabot Cliffs golf courses (rated #43 and #9 in the world by Golf Digest) by the sea, which are only 20 minutes away and offer a unique golfing experience in Inverness. Moose, eagles, deer and foxes are regulars. It's easy to meet people, and the daily rhythm here is slower than in most cities; we visit neighbours and friends whenever we can, as we are busy in the summer months. It's also nice to be in a place where you don't need air-conditioning; Cape Breton summers are warm-to-hot in the day, but perfect in the evening, and at the shore there are breezes to keep any bugs at bay. Chimney Corner beach is one of the finest on the island, but because it is not visible from the road, it's usually unoccupied during the week– we love to take our dog Ryder there for a good run.

There is no shortage of things to do in the area. There's a lovely new restaurant opening this summer just a half-mile north of this cottage.
